Cristiane Zuan Esteves is a Brazilian artist that has been working professionally as a director,
actor and dramaturg, dedicating herself to the creation of site specific and theatre work. She is
the founder of OPOVOEMPÉ (www.opovoempe.org) and has conceived, directed and written the
pieces and projects of the group. OPOVOEMPÉ works within the frontiers of urban life,
documentary theatre, and audio tours. Its projects Guerrilha Magnética, Out of Key(s),
AquiDentro AquiFora and A Máquina do Tempo were presented in international festivals in
Brazil, Croatia and Germany. The group has been twice awarded Foment ao Teatro da Cidade
de São Paulo. AquiDentro AquiFora was listed among the 10 best theatre pieces of the 2000-10
decade in Brazil by Cult Magazine.
In Europe, she completed the two years of the École Jacques Lecoq and trained with Yves
Lebreton, Yoshi Oida and Ariane Mnouchkine. She also wrote and directed Mon Grand Pére Avait
un Telescope with Mikhael Zeeh and Agnes Guipont. In 2007, she was artistic collaborator and
assistant director to Stefan Kaegi and Lola Arias in Chácara Paraíso, a project with brazilian
policemen produced by the Goethe Institute and presented in São Paulo, Lisboa (Alkantara
Festival) and Berlin (HAU), and in SOKO São Paulo, by Kaegi and Arias at Spielart in Munich.
She recently collaborated in Remote São Paulo, by Kaegi. And was the dramatur of 100% São Paulo of Rimini Protokoll in MITSP.
In New York, she performed at La Mama ETC in Andrea Paciotto s Spring Awakening, in Cain by ́
director Eric Wallach, in Caverns by choreographer Christine Sang and author Ruth Maccgraff
(part of the Mabou Mines Residency), and in Clarinda MacLow ́s The Odd Sea at The Yankee
Boat on the Hudson River. She also trained with the SITI Company. In 2006, Cristiane
participated in CITY AS STAGE, part of the Mobile Academy in Warsaw, Poland. In 2005, she s ́
collaborated with The International Theatre Collective in Saltwater, and toured the West Coast
of the USA and Canada.
In Mexico, she was guest artist of the group Mex Xhic Co, in Quijotes , a special project for the
Festival Cervantino and also acted in Andrea Paciotto ́s Despiertar de Primavera, performed at
Claustro de Sor Juana and produced by La Mama ETC.
Since 2004 in Brazil, Cristiane directed the pieces: Tudo O Que Passa Leva Um Pedaço, Sete
Palmos, O Círculo de Salomão (awarded Prize Miriam Muniz by the Ministry of Culture), and
9:50 Qualquer Sofá. In Brazil, she participated in workshops of Sotigui Kouyate, Anatole
Vassiliev and Simon McBurney. She taught Acting at at SP Escola de Teatro and has given many
workshops on Viewpoints and Urban Intervention.
